This is the first trailer for "Who Killed the Electric Car?" to be released by Sony Classics in June-July 2006. This is a must-see film for anyone who drives, has children, breathes, wonders about the potential effects of big industry and politics, or worries for our environmental or energy security future. This is more than a film about a car- it's about the challenges of changing status quo- and the consequences of not trying. You will emerge from the theatre entertained, emotional, and flat out pissed off- which is pretty much how you should be once you know, "Who Killed the Electric Car? Even more important, though, is what you do next.

An Inconvenient Truth

Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced. The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable.

Battery-Electric Vehicles vs. Hybrid-Electric Vehicles (HEV)

Battery-Electric Vehicles

Battery-electric vehicles produce essentially no pollutants or greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the tailpipe or through fuel evaporation. But the production of electricity used to charge the batteries does have environmental costs.

Generating stations fuelled by coal, oil and natural gas produce carbon dioxide – the principal GHG – and pollutants such as particulate matter, sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Fortunately, almost 60 percent of Canada's electricity is produced using hydroelectric generators, which create little or no air pollution. Another 12 percent is generated by nuclear reactors, which also produce no air pollution.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles

HEVs do produce GHG emissions, but such emissions are far fewer than those from conventional gasoline vehicles. HEVs reduce GHG emissions from vehicle operation and decrease upstream emissions by about 28 percent compared with conventional gasoline vehicles.

HEVs do not need electricity from another source (which may or may not produce emissions) because they use regenerative braking, the energy produced from coasting, and sometimes the gasoline engine to recharge their batteries.

The Sierra Club of BC is one of British Columbia’s best known and most effective voices for the environment. Through research, advocacy and outreach, the Sierra Club works for the conservation of natural ecosystems, the sustainable use of land and sea resources, and to mitigate climate change. In the past year, the Sierra Club has chalked up many successes, including the ground-breaking Great Bear Rainforest land-use agreement. To build on this momentum, the Sierra Club depends on support from individual British Columbians who care about the environment.
